Britta Joy Peterson is a Minnesota native, where she grew up in the thriving Minneapolis arts community. Peterson embraces a nomadic lifestyle filled with travel that informs her artistry. Currently based in Washington, DC, Peterson directs the Dance Program within the Performing Arts Department at American University.
As a dance maker, teaching artist and scholar, Peterson works primarily in contemporary and jazz forms with research interests in creative practices, performance pedagogy and somakinesis. She also specializes in dance for the theatrical stage with an extensive list of show credits in both choreographic and directorial roles.
Peterson’s choreographic and performance work has been seen in Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming and New Zealand. She holds her BA in Dance and Communications, magna cum laude, from Gustavus Adolphus College and her MFA in Dance, summa cum laude, from Arizona State University.
